MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, THE: IT WAS FASCINATION, I KNOW (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about Mary Richards, a single career woman working in a television newsroom.

In this episode, Phyllis barges in as Mary prepares for a date and announces that Bess is headed to a dance with a young man, William, though she instructs Mary and Rhoda not to "gush" when she greets them. Mary offers to drive the pair to the dance on the way to her date. In the morning, William appears in the newsroom, saying that he is writing a story for his school paper about the office. He meets Ted and Murray, and is mistaken for the mail boy by Lou, but he focuses on Mary and flatters her with compliments. Rhoda later observes that the boy has developed a crush on her. William then stops by Mary's apartment and confesses that he is not on the paper and merely wanted to spend time with her. Mary is mildly alarmed when he begins asking about her dating life and suggesting that they "get to know each other." She summons Bess and hurries out for ice cream. Bess declares William to be "totally bananas" when he ends things with her and explains that he is smitten with Mary.

Later, William sends flowers to Mary's office, and Ted and Lou both offer some rather unhelpful commentary about dealing with her unwanted suitor. Mary agrees to have lunch with William, determined to settle the matter once and for all. Phyllis visits her and declares that she approves of Mary as Bess' "rival" for William's affections. She tells the remarkably sad story of her own failed high school romance and depressing prom night, though seems unfazed by the memory. At the restaurant, William attempts to set a romantic scene and gives Mary a gaudy necklace. Despite his determination and the presence of an annoying violinist, she manages to convince him that they are "just not right for each other." Later, Bess visits Mary with her new beau, Roger, and is relieved when he does not appear to share William's interest in her. Commercials deleted.
