NEWHART: MRS. NEWTON'S BODY LIES A-MOULD'RING IN THE GRAVE (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedies about Dick and Joanna Loudon, who run a country inn in Vermont.

In this episode, Kirk happily heads off to the Harvard/Dartmouth football game as George, determining that the inn will soon require a new furnace, casually reveals that a body, that of Mrs. Sarah Newton, has lain buried in the inn's basement for three centuries. Shocked, Dick and Joanna immediately begin to investigate how they might have it removed as soon as possible and interred beside her husband in the local churchyard. The minister, however, reveals that Sarah was hanged for supposed witchcraft in the 17th century and therefore denied a Christian burial. However, he agrees to bypass several complicated steps and simply cross her off the "witch list."

George tracks down a new furnace, and Joanna reads up on the late Mrs. Newton, learning that she was a hard-working mother of seven before her untimely demise. The mortuary sends over a bewildered young man to handle the body, though he flees upon learning the exact nature of the situation; Dick resorts to calling some locals who will, apparently, "do anything for a buck." The eccentric Larry and his oddly named brothers, Darryl and Darryl (their first appearance on the series) arrive at the inn and seem surprisingly comfortable with the task. But Joanna, having developed a sense of sympathy toward the unfairly persecuted Sarah, decides that she should remain in the basement, far away from her "jerk" husband who didn't defend her in her hour of need. Dick summons the trio and informs them that their services aren't needed – but they soon prove useful around the inn after all.
