Summary
One in this series of comedies about Dick and Joanna Loudon, who run a country inn in Vermont.
In this episode, Dick and Joanna are baffled when a guest, "L. Gardner," is checked in without assistance. Meanwhile, Stephanie announces that she is attending an upscale charity ball in New York City. Michael admits that he is stuck working all night at the shoe store and begs Dick to "pinch-hit" for him; Dick very reluctantly accompanies Stephanie to the dinner. At the party, Stephanie tries to teach Dick how to pass himself off as an aloof millionaire, and Dick's confusion is interpreted as droll wit by her assorted frenemies. Back at the inn, Larry and the Darryls also encounter the mysterious L. Gardner, though they cannot agree on the person's appearance or gender.
Stephanie pretends that Dick's "backwoodsy" inn is actually a chain of fancy resorts. Though Dick is annoyed to learn of her fib, he is delighted to meet party guest Merv Griffin and ends up singing a duet with him. George stakes out the lobby, determined to meet L. Gardner; when Stephanie realizes that Dick is a hit with the fancy partygoers, she outs him as "not one of us." In retaliation, Dick reveals that Stephanie is now a maid, and the embarrassed pair flees to the balcony for the rest of the party. Early in the morning, George and Joanna rush outside to catch L. Gardner's departure, unaware of who has once again been left alone inside the inn. Commercials deleted.
