NEWHART: APPLES, APPLES, APPLES (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedies about Dick and Joanna Loudon, who run a country inn in Vermont.

Larry and the Darryls are upset because urban land developers are planning to drain the local swampland for a real estate project. They decide to raise money to purchase the land themselves by means of a walkathon, and Joanna agrees to help them out. George is excited for the annual Ye Olde Apple Days festival, but Dick believes that it may get discontinued due to being “excruciatingly dull.” George brings up the festival at the next town meeting, but is met with universal disinterest and resistance to the idea. Dick reluctantly gets up to offer George some support, proposing that the festival be retooled to be more interesting to the townsfolk. They get Michael to help come up with some new ideas for Ye Olde Apple Days, although his ideas seem to be more adult-oriented than George is used to, such as a female applesauce wrestling exhibition. Dick receives a call from Larry informing him that their walkathon has taken them all the way to Connecticut, meaning that his pledge is much greater than he anticipated.

That night, Dick gets another call from Larry, who is now in the Bronx. He also gets visited by George, who has been “fired” from the apple festival by Michael. He becomes depressed, and Michael comes the next morning with Stephanie, whom he has made his “co-producer.” He announces that the festival, retitled “Apples, Apples, Apples,” is to be held at the Ramada Inn, and that it is to be a lavish spectacle. George decides to hold his own Ye Old Apple Days festival at the Stratford in spite of Michael’s efforts. However, only Dick and Joanna show up for George’s festival, and he goes on with the proceedings in spite of the lack of attendance, including a pie-eating contest between Dick and Joanna. Meanwhile, Michael stars as the centerpiece of his own “Apples, Apples, Apples” show, done in the style of a musical spectacle with extensive costuming and choreography.

Eventually Dick and Joanna become frustrated and try to talk George out of completing his festival with just the two of them. However, the other townsfolk arrive, explaining that Michael’s show was “awful” and that they left due to its lack of interactivity. They apologize to George for not treating him with enough regard, and Michael and Stephanie show up as well. He is upset when he realizes that his show was hated, but is happy to participate in George’s apple festival. Larry calls Dick from Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee, announcing that their walkathon is over and that Dick’s pledge totals over $1,400. Commercials deleted.
