Summary

In this episode, Emily and Bob's romantic morning is interrupted by a phone call requesting a substitute teacher. Then, Arthur stops by to invite the pair to his dinner party for the neighbors. At work, Bob admits to Jerry that he wants to have a child, and Jerry reveals that he himself was adopted. At the dinner, conversation quickly turns to children and parenthood, as Arthur's wife Margaret is pregnant with their third. After Emily makes an off-hand joke about adoption, Bob presses her to discuss the matter seriously; they decide to meet with an agent.
Bob nervously prepares for their at-home interview and seeks advice from Jerry, who breezily assures him that he'll make a great dad. Bob dithers over his attire and beverage choice when Joan Radford arrives, but she urges the couple to simply relax and be themselves. Bob shows her their library, which he vows to transform into an infant's room, and they pass all of the lifestyle questions with flying colors. However, Joan admits that there is already a long wait-list for hopeful parents, meaning that they may have to hold off for an ironic nine months or even a year for a baby. Disappointed, Bob and Emily decide to use the time to "adjust" to the idea of parenthood. Commercials deleted.
