DOBIE GILLIS: THE BITTER FEUD OF DOBIE AND MAYNARD (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about the life of a young man named Dobie Gillis. In this episode, Dobie and Zelda agree to attend a series of lectures. Not surprisingly, Zelda protests when Maynard tries to pull Dobie away for less cultural pursuits. Later, they run into Chatsworth, who invites Dobie to play tennis with him at his club. Chatsworth leaves after Dobie says he can’t go to the club unless Maynard joins him. In class, Dobie admits that he hasn’t done his homework, supporting Maynard after the beatnik is singled out by Mr. Pomfritt for having bad work habits. After class, Zelda insists that Dobie give up Maynard. After Maynard overhears how Dobie’s life is negatively affected by their friendship, he dreams that Dobie dies in the desert on his account. Later, Maynard goes to see Dobie’s father and asks his advice about breaking off with Dobie. Still, Maynard can’t talk Dobie into parting ways. When Herbert then suggests that Maynard be “mean and rotten” to Dobie, Maynard starts insulting Dobie in class. When Dobie still tries to be pals, Maynard insists that he can’t be friends with “a rectangle.” Secretly, Maynard pines for his “good buddy,” which Zelda overhears. Everyone then snubs Dobie for being “a cad” to Maynard. Afterward, Dobie confronts Maynard and says he knows what has been behind Maynard’s actions. The two subsequently make up, after which criticism over Dobie’s association with Maynard starts anew. Commercials deleted. (Series title varies; as above, 1960-1963; as “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis,” 1959-1960.)
