PHILLY: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The first in this legal drama series about Philadelphia-based defense attorney Kathleen Maguire. In this episode, Kathleen's colleague Marian Marshall suffers a nervous breakdown in court and is taken to the hospital, and Kathleen is forced to take over her cases. She hurries to the trial of one Jerome Webster, who is charged with robbery, and the unamused judge tells Kathleen that Marian should have pled the case out, as the evidence points overwhelmingly to his guilt. Kathleen believes that he is innocent, however, and argues with the prosecutor, Terry Loomis, who agrees to pursue the case only if Jerome is willing. Jerome, however, does not believe that Kathleen can win and instead demands to take a deal for a short sentence. Frustrated, Kathleen witnesses a fight between two women in the courthouse bathroom and then heads to another case, where she argues that her client was not properly Mirandized when arrested. Her co-worker Clyde Coleman arrives with a witness that supports her client's story, and he is soon released.

Next, Kathleen prepares to defend a timid woman, Irene, accused of stabbing her husband, though Judge Hawes repeatedly answers his phone in court and makes it clear that he has already decided on Irene's guilt. Kathleen angrily calls him out on his conduct, and he holds her in contempt and sends her to lock-up. She is forced to call her ex-husband, Deputy for Trials Dan Cavanaugh, to pick up their son Patrick, and another lawyer, Will Froman, observes the scene and offers to handle her next case. Will talks to Kathleen's clearly-guilty client George and offers to get him probation in exchange for a higher fee, which he accomplishes thanks to his ongoing affair with A.D.A Lisa Walensky. In jail, Kathleen encounters one of the women from the bathroom fight, Shayna, who reveals that she attended Jerome's hearing and that he is indeed innocent of the robbery – because he was elsewhere murdering a man named Darryl at the time, meaning that he is using the lesser charge as an alibi. Upon her release, Kathleen visits Hawes and grudgingly signs a written apology while ignoring his inappropriate flirtations. An annoyed Dan tells Patrick about his mother's defiant actions, and Kathleen finds Terry and tells him about Jerome's case, learning that another man, Anthony Cole, has been accused of committing the murder. Kathleen then confronts Jerome, who freely admits to the crime, stating that Cole's situation is "not his problem."

Will visits Kathleen and gives her the money from George's case, announcing that he should be her new partner. Kathleen is doubtful, but Will explains that he knows a good deal about her and that she is his "role model." She then meets with Cole and offers to represent him for free, assuring him that she believes in his innocence in the Darryl murder. Later, she visits Marian, who apologizes to her, and Kathleen finally heads home for the night, overwhelmed by the events of the day. Includes commercials and promos.
