WEI CHENG {THE FORTRESS} {EPISODE 2 OF 10} {MANDARIN
CHINESE} (TV)

Summary

The first of two programs on this tape.  Episode two of ten in this television adaptation of the Chinese novel, "Wei Cheng," (The Fortress) written by Qian Zhongshu in the 1940s. It details the love and marriage of a western-educated man named Fang Hongjian in the late 1930s in China.

Episode two continues with the protagonist Mr. Fang Hongjian's life in Shanghai. Episode two begins with Mr. Fang on a train to go to his own home for a short visit. Upon his arrival, Mr. Fang is greeted by his father, brother, other family members, and local newspaper reporters at the station. Once Mr. Fang gets home, his family members are in awe of the presents he has brought back from Europe. The town elders treat him as a local celebrity, offering to marry their available daughters to him, and inviting him to give a speech at the local college. When it’s time to give the speech, Mr. Fang speaks of opium and syphilis, shocking the old folks, who stop his speech, and making the younger people laugh hilariously. Afterwards, everyone treats Mr. Fang as an eccentric young man and no respectable family wants to marry their daughters to him. A few days later, Mr. Fang leaves his hometown to go back to Shanghai. Once in Shanghai, Mr. Fang stays at his father-in-law's house again and works at his father-in-law's bank as well. One day, his father-in-law Mr. Zhou introduces Mr. Fang to a business associate named Jimmy Zhang, who wants to marry his daughter to Mr. Fang. Although Mr. Fang has no interest in Mr. Zhang's daughter, out of nicety he accepts Mr. Zhang's invitation to visit their house. Upon seeing the intended girl, Mr. Fang is positive that he has no interest in her and leaves the Zhang's house in haste. Mr. Fang next decides to call upon Miss Su Wenwan, one of the women he met on the ship returning from Europe in episode one. Miss Su gladly welcomes his visit and also introduces her younger cousin Miss Tang Xiaofu to Mr. Fang, who immediately is taken by the young beauty. Episode two ends with Mr. Fang, Miss Su, and Miss Tang happily talking about various topics.
