KIDS IN THE HALL, THE: SAME GUYS, NEW DRESSES (TV)

Summary

A documentary about the 1999-2000 “Kids in the Hall” reunion tour, featuring footage from their performances. The troupe performs in one of their trademark drag sketches featuring the Cathy and Kathie characters, and footage is shown of them rehearsing and choreographing the sketch. There is footage of the publicity photography for the tour. During preparation, the troupe learns how to apply their own makeup, and just before the show they dress and review their routine. Next is footage of a “Simon and Hecubus” sketch featuring Kevin McDonald and Dave Foley, followed by footage of the troupe discussing Foley’s upcoming laser eye surgery, prompting some concern for his ability to perform on stage. Their lawyer, David Himelfarb, convinces Foley to reschedule his surgery. There is footage of them traveling to their show venue and attempting to organize their equipment. Their first show begins late due to a luggage mix-up, forcing a delayed set-up of their stage projectors. McDonald and Foley hastily contrive a humorous apology for the impatient audience. Footage is shown from one of Thompson’s sketches featuring his “Buddy Cole” character. Six weeks before the first show, the troupe begins rehearsals. Thompson requests and receives a toy robot dog to use in one of his sketches. After the first night, Thompson and the other members discuss ways to overcome the limitations of performing alongside the robot dog. Despite Thompson’s misgivings, Foley figures out how to make the dog walk, although Thompson is still dissatisfied with the dog’s relative lack of activity and eventually works the dog out of his monologue. The troupe discusses the possibility of getting a tour bus, although there are complications with this arrangement. They also discuss their future projects together. There is also footage of the “Jesus 2000” mock infomercial sketch. In New York City, Thompson is slated to be on Conan O’Brien’s talk show, but he cancels. McDonald and Foley obtain a recording of Thompson’s telephone pre-interview with Conan, and visit Conan in his office to ask him why he canceled. They arrange brief cameo on Conan’s show, and the next day Foley is apprehensive about Thompson’s possible reaction to this. McDonald tries to make sure Thompson isn’t upset, although he does feel somewhat slighted. Backstage they discuss the possibility of a road tour which could lead to the development of a film, noting the difficulties they had while writing and filming the movie “Brain Candy.” Backstage they make last-minute preparations for their final performance. At the end they put on one last sketch, the “Reg” sketch, involving them reminiscing about a mutual friend, whom they reveal that they murdered. With that, they end their show and sign autographs for their fans.
