TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {PAT BOONE; DON RICKLES; DIONNE WARWICK, HAL DAVID, DR. IRWIN M. STILLMAN} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson's guests for this program are singer Pat Boone, comedian Don Rickles, singer/actress Dionne Warwick, lyricist Hal David, and Dr. Irvin M. Stillman.

In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: their use of a temporary new studio, the former "Let's Make a Deal" room, owing to Bob Hope's use of their regular space; announcer Ed McMahon's new diet book, "Slimming Down"; President Richard Nixon's frustration with television reruns; the return of "Monday Night Football" and a new halftime show; developments at the United Nations; and George McGovern's presidential campaign. Carson and McMahon then discuss an unusual claim from "Ripley's Believe It Or Not!", which states that jewelry beads fall from the sky during rainstorms in a certain area of India, to which Carson reacts with skepticism.

As the evening's first guest, Boone sings "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" and "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" in honor of fellow guest David. He then chats with Carson about the "Ripley's" claim; his family's recent trip the Playboy Club, in contrast to their usual wholesome image; his thoughts on the famous "Bunnies"; and why his daughters are often mistaken for other members of the family.

Rickles then takes the stage and, after harassing conductor Doc Severinsen and the band, banters with Carson about his upcoming appearance at the Valley Music Fair; his short-lived comedy series, "The Don Rickles Show"; his upcoming special, "Don Rickles: Alive and Kicking," in which Carson and many other noted comedians will appear; his annoyance with the "Guam-like" heat of the studio; why he chooses to keep his political views private; his sense that the notoriously private Carson does not "mix with" most of the "Tonight Show" staff; his claim that Carson "hums off-key," which he then refutes; why Carson does not sing or dance in his comedy act, unlike Rickles; and how Rickles' mother, present in the audience, compares to Carson's sensible Midwestern parents.

Warwick performs "Alfie" and then chats with Carson about the song's many different recordings; the surprising fact that popular song "(They Long to Be) Close To You" was originally a B-side; her current pregnancy with second son Damon; her longtime work with songwriter Burt Bacharach and lyricist David; and why her (temporary) addition of an "E" to the end of her surname has apparently brought her good fortune.

Next, David joins Warwick, Carson and the other guests and discusses why he is not bothered by collaborative partner Bacharach's greater fame; his "four or five" different sets of lyrics for "Raindrops"; why he almost turned down writing the title song for the film "Alfie" (1966); and writing the theme for "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (1962). Warwick then performs a medley of Bacharach/David songs, including "Walk On By," "I Say A Little Prayer" and "Do You Know the Way to San Jose."

Finally, Stillman takes the stage and discusses his new book – a competitor to McMahon's – entitled "The Doctor's Quick Weight Loss Diet," and shares frank comments about Rickles' weight and why Severinsen is currently "the ideal" size; and his explanation of the meaning of metabolism and of different body types. Includes commercials.
