TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {REDD FOXX; KAREN VALENTINE; GEORGE GOBEL; JOE WILLIAMS} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson's guests for this program are actress Karen Valentine, comedian George Gobel, comedian Redd Foxx, and singer Joe Williams.
In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: the previous night's "weird" audience; his writers' relative responsibility for bad jokes; announcer Ed McMahon's upcoming trip to Houston for the annual Budweiser convention; the ongoing Paris Peace Accords; the accomplishments of Barbara Allen Rainey, the United States Navy's first female pilot; the antics of "football nut" Nixon; the current jet-fuel shortage; and a misunderstanding involving the British term "solicitor," which refers to a lawyer.
After bantering with McMahon about the less-than-successful monologue, Carson welcomes Valentine, who discusses her appearances in California television milk advertisements, filmed at her own house; her recent weight loss; her upcoming trip to London to shoot "Coffee, Tea or Me?" (1973), a comedy about a flight attendant with two husbands; whether the milk ads will help her image; being mistaken for Sally Field by eager "fans"; and an unfortunate incident of holiday overeating. Carson also appears as "Mark Splitzs" in a parody of the milk ads, as well as several other commercials.
Next, Gobel takes the stage and talks about his unusual mink tie; a vintage photo of his 1940s appearances on the WLS National Barn Dance Chicago radio show; his refusal to drink and drive; a funny story about his whiskey-salesman friend; his golf club and unlucky habit of parking near the automatic sprinklers; and a long tale involving multiple incidents of running out of gas.
Foxx then takes the stage with a quartet of small dogs, whom he introduces as his own pets, and then brings on a large St. Bernard "guard dog," also discussing his trip to Vietnam with Bob Hope, his first trip out of the U.S.
Finally, Williams performs "Beautiful People" and "God Bless You." Includes commercials.
