SIX FEET UNDER: FAMILIA (TV)
Summary
One in this series about the Fisher clan, a loving -- if dysfunctional -- family struggling to maintain a sense of normalcy in the face of the stressful day-to-day operations of the eccentric family business, a funeral home in Los Angeles. In this episode, a young gang member, "Paco," is shot by a rival in front of his horrified girlfriend. Brenda and Nate are questioned by the police, who suspect that one of them – or Claire – set fire to the old house recently purchased by Gilardi. David learns that the home's air conditioning need an expensive repair, and he meets with Paco's devastated parents as well as one of his gang brothers, "Powerful." Rico is offended when David asks for his help, having "assumed" that he has a connection to gang culture, though Rico eventually stands up to Powerful and convinces him to defer to the parents' wishes. Nate reveals to David that Claire has experimented with meth, wondering if she really did set the fire, and Keith advises David to get his sister a lawyer. A rude man in a parking lot uses an offensive slur against the two of them, and David is alarmed when Keith responds aggressively.
Later, David imagines a conversation with the dead Paco, who urges him to stand up for himself as Keith did. Brenda comes over for dinner and observes that there is "a lot of sadness" in the house, and Ruth is shocked to catch the couple in an intimate moment. Everyone sits down for an uncomfortable meal, and Ruth appears disinterested in her boys' plan for saving their business. When she asks, David admits that he has been attending a different church from hers with his cop "friend." At the funeral, Claire bonds with Luis, one of Paco's friends, but he is angered when she seems intrigued by his criminal life, telling her that she does not truly understand. David quickly ushers Tracy out when she attempts to gatecrash, and Nate comforts Paco's mother, telling her about his own father's recent death. Paco encourages David to make things right with Keith, and Nate learns that the police have closed the case on the house fire, unable to definitively prove the cause. David finds Keith at church and apologizes, though notes that his aggressive side frightened him, but Keith points out that he deals with constant homophobia from fellow cops and cannot be as "patient" with David as he would like.
Claire is annoyed when Nate tries to question her about her personal problems, and Nate and David tell Ruth that they need $93,000 from her out of Nathaniel's life insurance in order to boost their marketing and improve their business in order to compete with Kroehner. She agrees, but states that she is now an investor and has certain rights. Gilardi summons the brothers to a meeting and, acting on Paco's advice to "step up," David responds to Gilardi's threats to "bury them" with uncharacteristic aggression. Brenda visits Ruth and apologizes for the embarrassing moment with Nate, admitting that their relationship could be going somewhere after all, and Ruth asks her to "be careful with him." Powerful and the rest of Paco's family invite the Fishers to pray with them and offer their condolences for Nathaniel's death, and while out bowling, David decides that he and Keith are indeed officially "together." Nate is stunned to realize that Brenda likely set the house fire as a favor of sorts to him, while elsewhere Claire assures her mother that she is not the culprit, though admits that she stole the foot.
