TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {GLEN CAMPBELL, DON RICKLES, DOM DELUISE, JIMMY BRESLIN} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson's guests for this program are musician Glen Campbell, comedian Don Rickles, comedian Dom DeLuise, and journalist Jimmy Breslin. In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: threats from Arab oil merchants; pollution dangers facing penguins; an eccentric man's decision to establish his own airline; a pricey auction for an original George Washington letter; and an unusual idea for a junior-high day care center.
Carson sits down with co-host Ed McMahon and previews the following night's Mighty Carson Art Players sketch, a parody of the musical film "Lost Horizon" (1973). He then acknowledges the 192nd birthday of the city of Los Angeles by displaying a number of funny "artifacts" from its nearly two centuries of existence.
Campbell takes the stage and performs "Back Home Again in Indiana," and then chats with Carson about his upbringing on a farm and the joys of rural life; jokes from golf stars Arnold Palmer and Gay Brewer; and a funny story from his days as a studio guitarist for Frank Sinatra. He then plays the song "If."
Rickles joins the others and, naturally, banters with Campbell about his wholesome, folksy image and teases Carson about his wealth and fame. He discusses his new television special with Don Adams, "A Couple of Dons," set to premiere on September 8th, and a series of clips of outtakes from the program are shown, prompting Campbell to relate a story of working with Burt Reynolds and dealing with misbehaving animals.
Next, DeLuise discusses his new sitcom, "Lotsa Luck," set to premiere on September 10th; his failed attempt to befriend Rickles in the NBC commissary; and how his busy schedule is damaging his romantic life with his wife, to which Rickles has a number of characteristically ribald retorts.
Finally, Breslin takes the stage and discusses his new book "World Without End, Amen"; why he is the "same louse" despite receiving sophisticated critical praise for the work; the perils of writing drunk; his extensive research into the life of a Queens police officer who was placed on restricted duty for excessive drinking; the cop's trip to visit family in Northern Ireland and the cultural parallels between the poor treatment of African-Americans and of Irish Catholics; and his eternal love for New York City. Includes commercials.
