ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD, THE: THE MAY QUEEN (TV)
Summary
One in this action-adventure series about the famous Robin Hood, the benevolent outlaw of medieval England. In this episode, Robin and Little John spot a party in the woods and are saddened to realize that Sir Donnington has been killed in the Crusades. Donnington's son, Sir Walter, enjoys an afternoon with his fiancée, Genevieve Blackstone, but then learns of his father's "valiant" demise. His associate notes that England has become "sick" in the king's absence, with barons attempting to steal one another's land, though Lady Donnington declares that Walter will be safe once he marries Genevieve, as her father is a powerful lord. Walter visits Lord Blackstone and says that he intends to seek Blackstone's advice now that he is the head of the home, though Blackstone tells him that together they could become "the greatest power in the Midlands" if they make alliances with other local lords. Walter points out that the king could view this as treason, however, and Blackstone reconsiders him. He meets up with Count de Clifford and points out that Donnington's land is positioned between both of theirs, suggesting that they should claim that Walter's father, a notorious gambler, owed a large debt at the time of his death that must be settled by the sale of his land. He declares that the Sheriff can be bribed into playing along, adding that he will seal their alliance by allowing de Clifford to marry Genevieve.
Walter strongly denies the debt claim, sure that his father settled his affairs before heading to war, and the Sheriff decides that they must settle the issue on "the field of honor" in combat. Lady Donnington and Genevieve both beg Walter not to fight, particularly upon learning that de Clifford has hired a formidable champion to fight in his place. The Sheriff points out that Walter too can hire someone else, though he states that he cannot afford it and the champion calls the business "distasteful" and demands more money from de Clifford. Robin and his friends head to the May Day celebrations, where a disconsolate Genevieve has been crowned the May Queen, and they perform as acrobats before capturing Walter. Genevieve dismisses her father's suggestion that she should marry de Clifford once Walter is dead, and she is deeply relieved when Walter quickly defeats de Clifford's champion. "Walter" is then revealed to be Robin in disguise, however, and though Walter balks at the idea of claiming "another man's honor," Genevieve thanks Robin and convinces Walter to play along for the sake of their future. de Clifford storms off in anger, and Lord Blackstone is forced to allow Walter and Genevieve to finally marry.
