BROOKLYN BRIDGE: SATURDAY (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic series about a middle-class Jewish family living in Brooklyn, New York, in the 1950s.
In this episode, Alan and Nathaniel are thrilled that their father finally has a Saturday off from the post office. However, George tells them that it's a good day to do chores, rather than for the three of them to play sports. Likewise, Phyllis wants to go to the movies with Sophie to see Sophie's favorite actor, Danny Kaye, in his new movie. To the disappointment of Phyllis, Sophie insists on doing laundry. Elsewhere, Jules is obsessed with a red 1953 Buick convertible which Sid is selling.
Ultimately, everyone gives in to temptation. As Sophie and Phyllis go to see Danny Kaye in "The Court Jester," George, Jules, Alan, and Nathaniel take the convertible for a test drive to Coney Island. There, the boys go on all the rides and Alan wins a stuffed bear for Nathaniel. The boys follow up with a bit of fishing off the pier, as the girls head to Sid's for sundaes. There, Sid spills the beans to an amused Phyllis and Sophie about the Coney Island outing.
Back at home, George, Jules, Alan, and Nathaniel try to maintain their ruse about having done errands, but their tall tale is quickly undone by Phyllis and Sophie. In her enthusiasm over their "victory," Sophie then accidentally tells how she and Phyllis avoided chores as well, with everyone having a good laugh. Later, Sophie tells the group why Shabbos was always special in the old country.
As the busy day ends, the group watches "The Honeymooners," but only Nathaniel and Alan are awake to enjoy "Gunsmoke." As the evening ends with the broadcast of "Your Hit Parade," Nathaniel turns off the TV. Walking to the window, he finally understands why the day's occurrences were "once in a blue moon." Commercials deleted.
