LOST: EVERYBODY HATES HUGO (TV)

Summary

One in this fantasy drama series about a group of plane-crash survivors forced to live with each other on a remote and mysterious island. Characters’ past lives are told through frequent flashbacks. In this episode, Hurley has an odd dream in which an English-speaking Jin cautions him that "everything's going to change." He awakens in the hatch and inputs the fateful numbers, while on the other side of the island the "Others" order their three prisoners out of the pit, though a defiant Sawyer remains underground. In the past, Hurley is stunned when he wins the lottery thanks to Leonard's numbers, though he opts not to tell his mother as she begins to lecture him about his life choices. On the island, Charlie takes offense when Hurley awkwardly dodges his questions about the hatch, and Rose, who seems calmly disinterested in their discovery, is shocked when Hurley takes her there and shows her its surprising contents. Jack, annoyed that Hurley has shared the secret, places him in charge of inventorying the food, firmly stating that no one is to take anything yet. Rose assists Hurley and mentions her husband, Bernard, confidently stating that he is "fine" even though he was in the rear of the plane at the time of the crash. Hurley, uncomfortable with his new role, is further frustrated when Rose gives Kate a bottle of shampoo.

In the past, Hurley abruptly quits his job at Mr. Cluck's when his rude boss Randy chastises him for eating on the job, and Hurley's pal Johnny quickly follows suit. Charlie tails Locke into the forest and demands answers about the hatch, declaring that he is tired of being left "at the kids' table," and Locke matter-of-factly tells him about Desmond and the mysterious button. Locke adds that he intends to continue pushing it by assigning everyone to shifts, though Charlie deems the plan "a bit nutty." Sayid explores the hatch's foundations and finds thick walls and a strange magnetic source, guessing that the space is powered by a geothermal generator. Sawyer finally emerges from the pit under the ruthless instruction of Ana-Lucia, who orders them all to "move out," and Hurley unhappily refuses when Charlie requests a jar of peanut butter from the hatch for Claire, causing Charlie to declare that he has "changed." In the past, Johnny is highly impressed when Hurley, who has still not told anyone of his lottery win, finally asks out his crush, Starla. Kate enjoys her first shower in weeks in the hatch, and one of the tailies, Libby, tells Michael that they started out as a group of twenty-three – though their numbers have since dwindled.

Claire and Shannon hesitantly inform Sun that they have found one of the message bottles on the beach, suggesting that something bad has happened to the raft. Hurley demands to know why Locke told Charlie about the hatch, sure that things will now change for the worst. When Locke refuses to let him off of food duty, a desperate Hurley recovers dynamite from the Black Rock, telling Rose that he "can't let it happen again." In the past, Hurley and Johnny amuse themselves by pranking Randy, and Hurley asks his friend to promise that their lives will never change. Johnny assures him that their friendship is solid, but he is stunned and hurt when a news crew reveals Hurley's big secret. Hurley frets to Rose that everyone will grow to hate him if he is forced to make tough choices about the food, but he is relieved when Jack agrees that they will do things "his way." Hurley carefully doles out food, including a jar of peanut butter for Charlie to give to Claire, and the castaways react with joy, rather than anger, towards Hurley. Sun privately buries the bottle with the messages, and on the other side of the island, Michael and Sawyer are surprised when one of the few remaining survivors, Bernard, anxiously asks them for news of his wife, revealing that Rose's instincts were right after all.
