LOST: FIRE + WATER (TV)

Summary

One in this fantasy drama series about a group of plane-crash survivors forced to live with each other on a remote and mysterious island. Characters' past lives are told through frequent flashbacks. In this episode, Charlie dreams of a childhood Christmas at which he receives a piano from his mother, who assures him that he will "get them out" with his talents. Charlie then finds himself on the island and panics when he hears Aaron trapped inside the instrument, but he awakens and finds Aaron safe with Claire – and Locke. He attempts to apologize to Claire again for lying about the heroin-filled statues, but she tersely asks him to "give her space." In the past, Charlie meets his new infant niece Megan at the hospital and assures his sister-in-law Karen that Liam is on his way, having missed his flight, though he is really passed out at home in a heroin stupor. Back on the island, Hurley shyly questions Sawyer about Libby, and Kate observes that Jack is spending time with Ana-Lucia. Charlie has a religion-themed dream in which Claire and his own mother warn him that he must save Aaron from danger, but he awakens to find himself holding the baby by the water's edge, having unknowingly nabbed him while sleepwalking.

Charlie seeks Locke's help in smoothing things over with Claire, and when Locke demands to know if Charlie is using again, he lies and claims that all of the heroin was destroyed when they burned the plane. In the past, Liam collapses during an embarrassing commercial shoot featuring "You All Everybody," and the irritated director fires them when Charlie refuses to oust his brother. Encouraged by Sawyer, Hurley flirts with Libby over laundry, though wonders if he knows her from somewhere pre-815. Charlie seeks Eko's counsel about his strange dreams of saving Aaron, and he soon finds Claire and frantically tells her that the baby must be baptized for his own safety, though Kate forces him to leave. Ana teases Jack about his bond with Kate, wondering how far they have taken their flirtation, and Charlie returns to his secret stash in the jungle. In the past, Liam tearfully admits that Karen has kicked him out for endangering Megan, and though Charlie assures him that he is writing a new song that will bring them success, Liam is more concerned with scoring again.

Locke catches Charlie with his stash, and though Charlie swears that he is being "tested" in his resolve to save Aaron and does not intend to use, Locke takes the statues away and denounces him as untrustworthy. Claire questions Locke about the baptism idea, though Locke suggests that Charlie is merely projecting his own fears for himself onto Aaron. In the past, Liam admits that he has sold Charlie's beloved piano to fund his trip to Australia, where he intends to get clean and reunite with Karen and Megan, though Charlie angrily counters that he too is "family." On the island, Charlie starts a fire to distract everyone and steals Aaron, desperate to go through with his plan, but Eko and Locke manage to convince him to return the baby to a terrified Claire, after which Locke makes his disapproval plain with a few hard punches. Jack stitches up Charlie's injuries and orders him never to repeat his dangerous stunt, though Charlie reasserts that he has not relapsed. Eko tells Claire that Charlie "misunderstood" his advice, but Claire asks him to baptize both her and Aaron anyway, clearly moved by Charlie's ideas of "protection." Includes commercials and promos.
