LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN {JOAQUIN PHOENIX, AUSTIN STEVENS, SWITCHFOOT} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by David Letterman. This program features actor Joaquin Phoenix, "snake master" Austin Stevens, and musical guest Switchfoot.

In his opening monologue, Letterman touches upon the following topics: Jay Leno's forthcoming departure from "The Tonight Show"; a pricey dirigible on sale for the holiday season; Martha Stewart's prison sentence; the upcoming presidential debate; and the colorful new $50 bill. Further topics commented upon include his infant son's visit to the "Late Late Show" offices; and his typically good rapport with animals, with the exception of one rambunctious dingo.

Letterman then checks in with Hello Deli owner Rupert Jee, who is having no luck at bingo at the Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut. Letterman then speculates about the television landscape in 2009, when Leno departs "Tonight" to be replaced by Conan O'Brien; he jokes about potential technological advances and changes to popular series in five years' time. After a message from Democratic nominee John Kerry and an installment of "George W. Bush Talks Street," Letterman introduces the "Top Ten List," offering name suggestions for real estate mogul Donald Trump's new cologne.

The first guest, Phoenix, then joins Letterman and discusses his new film "Ladder 49" (2004), for which he trained extensively with real firemen; his lack of talk show-appropriate "funny stories"; his upcoming film "Walk the Line" (2005), in which he portrays country singer Johnny Cash; his childhood fan encounter with John Travolta, his co-star in "Ladder"; and a shocking story of going into anaphylactic shock from a bee sting while riding his motorcycle – which he then admits actually happened to "Ladder" and "Line" co-star Robert Patrick, not to him. A clip from "Ladder" is shown.

Next, herpetologist and host of "Austin Stevens: Snakemaster" Stevens takes the stage to introduce an extremely reluctant Letterman to an Eastern diamondback rattlesnake and a manacled cobra, both of which are highly venomous, as well as a non-venomous albino Burmese python, noted for its bright yellow hue.

Cue-card manager Tony Mendez then offers some belated spoilers for "Star Wars: Return of the Jedi" (1983) in Spanish, and Switchfoot performs "Dare You to Move" from their album "The Beautiful Letdown." The show closes with another check-in on Jee, who still has not won bingo. Includes commercials and promos.
