ADVENTURES OF YOUNG INDIANA JONES, THE: CHAPTER THREE: THE PERILS OF CUPID {VIENNA, NOVEMBER 1908 AND FLORENCE, MAY 1908} (TV)

Summary

This direct-to-video feature is an edited combination of episodes from "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles," the adventure series about a young American who travels the world and becomes involved with the historical figures and events of his time. This installment contains the flashback scenes from the episodes "Vienna, November 1908" and "Florence, May 1908." The program begins in Vienna as young Henry "Indiana" Jones, Jr. meets a girl in his horseback riding class who turns out to be none other than Princess Sophie von Hohenberg, daughter of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand. On an outing with their governesses, Henry wanders off with Sophie to go ice-skating, but finds himself in trouble for endangering the princess. His father, in town for a psychiatric conference, scolds him for causing a "diplomatic incident" and forbids him from attending further horseback riding lessons. As Miss Seymour attempts to tutor the boy, she notices his distraction and realizes that he is in love, and she shows him some classic poetry on similar themes. Later, Henry is pleased to receive a letter from Sophie and decides to buy her a "courtship" present, and after cleverly winning money at a shell game on the street, purchases a snowglobe for her. When he attempts to deliver it to the palace, however, he is stopped by the guards.

Henry attends a dinner with other guests of the conference, including Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung and Alfred Adler. They fall into a debate about their profession, with Freud citing repressed sexuality as the root of most issues, and when Henry weighs in to ask for a definition of love, the doctors are impressed at his insight. Henry admits that he himself is currently in love, and they offer him varied advice. More determined than ever, Henry returns to the palace and demands to see the Archduke, and when he is taken to him, asks for Sophie's hand in marriage—at some point in the future. Though he acknowledges his respect for Henry's daring, the Archduke refuses to give his consent to an American and sends Henry away, but Henry sneaks back into to find Sophie, and after evading the guards, finds her. He explains that he is leaving Vienna the following day, and she gives him a locket with her picture in it. They declare their intentions for one another and promise to write, and on the train the next day, Anna tells a saddened Henry that he will someday find his "other half."

When they arrive in Florence, the family visits a number of art museums and attends the opera "La Boheme." There they meet the Reales, who invite the Joneses to stay at their home rather than in their cramped hotel room, and they accept. During the performance, Anna catches sight of the passionate composer, Giacomo Puccini, and he joins their group for supper after the show. Henry tells Puccini that his father is headed to Rome for a lecture and he himself is going to Pisa to study physics and recreate Galileo's famous gravity experiment, and Puccini offers to escort them. They travel to Pisa, and as Henry and Seymour climb the Tower to test the landing time of items dropped from the top, Anna and Puccini bond, discussing their childhoods. He admits that things are going badly with his wife and later sends Anna flowers, and she is clearly smitten. The family attends a rehearsal of "Madame Butterfly," and Puccini argues with his soprano, emphasizing the opera's themes of "unrequited love" and passion. Finally, he makes a move on Anna, but she resists, though admits that she is interested in him as well. Henry is confused by his mother's melancholy, and when Puccini finds her again and begs her to sate his "desperate" feelings, she finally gives in and they spend a romantic day together, spotted by Seymour.

Seymour continues tutoring Henry about Galileo's theory of a heliocentric universe, but when he looks through the scientist's telescope at the museum, he is upset to spot Anna and Puccini together. Anna is stunned when Puccini asks her to run away with him, saying that she inspires his music. Seymour attempts to comfort a distraught Anna, who admits that she feels "electrified" when she is with the composer, but Seymour cautions her to think of her family and the sacrifices that she would have to make in order to be with him. Later, Puccini spots Anna at the train station, but she ignores him and meets Henry coming in from Rome instead, and he watches as she declares her love for her husband. The two go home to Henry Jr., and the family is reunited. Commercials deleted.
