PETTICOAT JUNCTION: SPUR LINE TO SHADY REST {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The premiere in this comedy series about the spunky proprietor of a rural hotel -- which is accessible only by railroad – and her three amorous daughters. In this episode, Kate Bradley, owner of the Shady Rest Hotel, chastises her three daughters – man-hungry Billie Jo, bookworm Bobbie Jo, and tomboy Betty Jo – for swimming in the water tower just before the Hooterville Cannonball train is due. Uncle Joe Carson suggests building a swimming pool to increase the tourist trade, an idea Kate thinks is unrealistic. When the Cannonball arrives, engineer Charley Pratt offers a Kate a ride to town. Conductor Floyd Smoot asks Charley if a trestle will be rebuilt so that the train can get back to the main line. Charley thinks that the C. & F.W. Railroad has forgotten all about Hooterville. Meanwhile, at C. & F.W. headquarters, executives are questioning why the branch line from Pixley to Hooterville doesn’t connect to anywhere else. Cranky bigwig Homer Bedloe is then sent to Hooterville to investigate. Once in Hooterville, Homer is angry when the train bypasses the station to take Kate to the general store, manned by Herby Bates. General Store owner Sam Drucker tries to calm Homer down. Instead, Homer gets on the train and finds fault with the fact that Charley is letting Betty Jo drive the locomotive back to the Shady Rest. Along the way, Homer becomes increasingly irate at the railroad staff’s non-conventional ways. Meanwhile, Kate notices some young traveling salesmen being attracted to Bobbie Jo and convinces them to stay the night at the Shady Rest. Homer is appalled when the train makes a three-hour stopover so that everyone can have dinner with Kate. Homer then reveals his position with the company, and states that the Cannonball will be taken out of service. Finally, Homer says he’ll drive the train to Pixley himself. When he can’t get it to run, Homer opts to spend the night at the hotel. Kate assures everyone that they’ll see their way through the conundrum. Commercials deleted.
