OCTOBER ROAD: DANCING DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN (TV)
Summary
One in this drama series about a young novelist who returns to his hometown to teach at a local college after having written a tell-all book about the locals.
Nick believes that Aubrey is cheating on him and vows to confront her. Leslie attempts to get Bob to go out ballroom dancing with her, but he is extremely reluctant. Unbeknownst to her, Bob appears to be suffering from back pains. Hannah invites Ikey over to dinner that Saturday with herself, Sam, and Ray; she gets him to accept. Ray intends to adopt Sam, although Hannah is still uncertain about the prospect and doesn’t appreciate that Ray discussed it with Ikey. Alison brings the kids over to visit Owen and in private tells Owen that she got asked out on a date, bringing the status of their now-ambiguous relationship into question. Owen lies and tells her that he has begun dating again, and tells her she should do the same. Nick investigates the motel room where Aubrey has been visiting and finds it is occupied by an older man, who reveals that he is Aubrey’s father, Gabriel Diaz. Nick is embarrassed by this revelation and Gabriel seems to be highly critical of him. Gabriel is a self-professed liar and womanizer, but claims that all he wishes to do is “make peace” with Aubrey. He recounts that his own father was a deadbeat drunkard, but that when he was older he “understood” him. Gabriel proposes that he, Nick, and Aubrey all meet together simultaneously, but Nick walks out on him.
Owen decides to start dating again in response to Alison, and Pizza Girl, Phil, and Eddie each have their own recommendations as to who he should go out with. They start betting money on which woman Owen will forge an “honest love connection” with, much to Owen’s embarrassment. Nick confronts Aubrey and reveals that he knows about Gabriel. She notes that her relationship with her father is “complicated” and she would prefer not to talk about it. She indicates that her father shows up infrequently promising to repair their frayed relationship, but disappears before she can make any progress, leaving her largely disillusioned with him. Aubrey apologizes for concealing the truth from Nick and says she would rather keep Gabriel out of her life. Hannah is mad at Ray for revealing his adoption plans to Ikey and criticizes him for his “panicked” approach to their relationship. Ray demands an answer from Hannah about whether he can adopt Sam, but she remains evasive about the issue.
Sam speaks to Nick, believing that he has been avoiding him ever since the realization of Hannah’s upcoming marriage sunk in. Furthermore, Sam believes that Nick is simply using him in order to get closer to Hannah, and leaves, upset. Pizza Girl’s friend Bethany comes over to Phil’s place to have dinner with Owen, and Owen seems to like her. However, Bethany’s interest disappears when she learns that Owen has children and when Owen starts talking about Alison’s affair. Bethany soon finds an excuse to leave, and says that she doesn’t want to see Owen again. Bob goes in to get an X-ray on his back, hoping to get it fixed so he can go dancing with Leslie. Gabriel goes to visit Nick and Eddie at their window shop. He again tries to get Nick to set up a meeting between them and Aubrey, although Nick has made no progress in that regard. Owen goes out with Phil’s pick, Jody; she invites him back to her place even though she is not particularly interested in him. Bob’s back problems ease with the aid of muscle relaxants, and he tells Leslie that he has changed his mind about the ballroom dancing, much to her excitement.
Hannah finds Sam on the phone with Gavin, which secretly unnerves her. Nick keeps trying to convince Aubrey to meet with Gabriel. Ikey comes over for dinner and later speaks to Hannah about his situation and odd relationship with Ray. Ikey reveals that Eddie is particularly angry over Ikey’s affair with Alison, which surprises Hannah. Owen goes out on a date with Vanessa, Eddie’s recommendation, finding that she is a divorced mother with a similar background and priorities as himself. However, things become awkward when they run into Alison at an ice cream parlor, who happens to be in Vanessa’s yoga class. She is on her own date with a man named Trent, and Owen goes into a rant about Alison’s infidelity. He goes to punch Trent and accidentally strikes Vanessa instead. Bob’s doctor comes around to inform him that he believes that Bob may have some form of cancer, and asks him to see a few specialists. Owen becomes disheartened after his dating experiences and comes to believe that he will never find anyone other than Alison.
Hannah talks to Eddie, trying to get him to forgive Ikey. They argue about Eddie’s animosity towards him; it turns out that Eddie slept with Hannah the summer after Nick left town. He tries to get Hannah to come forward with her own secrets about the true identity of Sam’s father, and she says that he is right and she should “be accountable” for her actions. Bob and Leslie go out dancing together, and Aubrey and Gabriel finally sit down together for a talk. Nick gets a chance to reconcile with Sam, saying that he would like to try being his friend again, and Sam accepts. Nick also checks in with Gabriel and Aubrey, who seem to have reached an understanding of their own. While eating chicken wings in a bar to allay his sorrows, Owen nearly chokes to death on a chicken bone but is saved by an unknown woman. Gabriel and Nick are followed by a mysterious black car, and Gabriel admits that he will have to leave town to flee from shady characters attempting to collect debts from him. Hannah tells Ray that she has changed her mind about allowing him to adopt Sam. Includes commercials.
