LOST: THE BEGINNING OF THE END {FOURTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The fourth season premiere in this fantasy drama series about a group of plane-crash survivors forced to live with each other on a remote and mysterious island. Characters' past lives are told through frequent flashbacks. In this episode, off the island, Jack watches a news report about a high-speed car chase in which the driver is revealed to be another one of the "Oceanic Six": Hurley. At the police station, Detective Walton questions Hurley about why he fled from a convenience store in terror right before the chase, and Hurley denies having met Ana-Lucia when Walton mentions his former partner. When left alone, Hurley has a vision of Charlie drowning at the Looking Glass and panics, deeply relieved when Walton threatens him with "the nuthouse." On the island, Hurley is thrilled to learn that they are soon to be rescued, and Jack tells Kate that he intends to kill Locke if he returns. Rose, Sun and Claire happily discuss Charlie's part in their rescue, unaware of his death. Ben begs Danielle to take "his" daughter away to safety, and Hurley's celebration is interrupted by the return of Desmond and Sayid, who drop the "not Penny's boat" bombshell and then sadly reveal that Charlie has died.
Jack and Kate find that Naomi has vanished into the forest after being knifed by Locke, while Sayid and Sawyer argue about informing the others of Charlie's last message, now doubtful about the boat crew's true intentions. Off the island, Abaddon visits Hurley at the mental hospital, claiming to be an attorney from Oceanic, but he then pointedly asks if "they" are still alive. Jack finds that Naomi has left a fake blood trail in the woods and Ben smugly informs him that Kate stole the sat phone before they separated, while elsewhere Kate is attacked by the badly-injured Naomi. Kate swears that Locke alone is to blame, and Naomi contacts George on the phone, claiming that she was injured in an accident and sending her love to her sister before dying. Hurley comes across a mysterious cabin in the woods, in which he spots Christian Shephard and another unknown person, and he runs into Locke as he flees the scene. Locke is further convinced that the freighter people are dangerous when he learns of Charlie's message, and Hurley wonders how he will convince Jack and the others. The two groups find one another and Sun and Jin are happily reunited, as are Rose and Bernard, but Claire is devastated to learn of Charlie's death from Hurley.
At the mental hospital, Hurley panics upon seeing a vision of Charlie, who also appeared to him at the convenience store. Charlie agrees that he is in fact dead, but firmly tells Hurley that "they need him." On the island, Jack attempts to kill Locke, as promised, but the gun is empty and Locke protests that he has acted in the best interest of the group. Kate reappears and reveals that Naomi "covered" for Locke before dying, but Locke remains convinced of the danger and states that he will hide at the Barracks. Hurley tearfully states that he is on Locke's side because he trusts Charlie's final words and is joined by Claire and Ben, though Rose and Bernard side with Jack, and Kate is upset when Sawyer declares that he will stay on the island in the interest of survival. The two groups part ways, and in the future, Jack visits Hurley at the hospital and Hurley deduces that Jack is worried that he will "tell." Hurley apologizes for siding with Locke, but then states that "it wants us to come back," though Jack swears that they will never return. On the island, an unknown man parachutes out of a helicopter and greets Jack by name. Includes commercials and promos.
