BOSTON LEGAL: GREEN CHRISTMAS (TV)
Summary
One in this darkly comic series focusing on a firm of brilliant but emotionally-challenged attorneys in Boston. In this episode, Walt Bonner sternly tells Denny that his firm is not nearly as environmentally-conscious as he claimed it was, and Denny, annoyed with his "smug socialist" attitude, shoots him with a paintball gun. An aggravated Carl tells Denny that Walt is suing them for fraud, but Denny is unconcerned. Clarence admits to Alan that the bank has foreclosed on his home because he could not make the payments under their skyrocketing interests rates, and Alan vows to aid him. Carl tasks Katie with assisting him in defending Denny, and Jerry is stunned to learn that objectophile Leigh has dumped him for an iPhone. Denny offers his apologies to Walt in a meeting, but undermines this somewhat when he shoots at him with an air pistol as he complains about the firm's non-green ways. Alan accuses Clarence's banker of scamming him with an unfairly-structured loan, though the banker points out that they too are suffering because of the stock market and are foreclosing on people just to stay afloat. He admits his uncertainty to Denny, then asking him if he is due for another CAT scan.
Jerry continues mourning Leigh, though Katie points out that she is "a total nutjob" and that he would do better to move on. Alan learns that his "buddy," the folksy Melvin Palmer, is representing the bank, and Melvin condescendingly argues that Clarence understood the parameters and penalties of the loan when he signed the contract and has no legal right to object to the foreclosure, regardless of the surprise of the extreme rate increase. Carl informs Lorraine that she will not be fired from the firm despite her criminal past, largely because of Shirley's support, though adds that this may change if her past becomes public knowledge and harms the firm's image. Walt takes the stand to explain Denny's deception, but Katie quickly points out his hypocrisy by highlighting the many ways in which he himself is not living a green life. Melvin ignores Clarence's argument about his "unforeseeable" financial circumstances, but Alan counters that the case will come down to emotion and that a jury will surely support Clarence from a personal, rather than legal, point of view. Alan then accompanies Denny to his brain scan, and the doctor explains that he is showing signs of "mild cognitive impairment." He informs Denny that he has an eighty percent chance of developing Alzheimer's within the next six years, but adds that given his lifestyle, he will likely not live that long.
Walt's lawyer and Carl make their closing arguments, with Carl stating that the reactionary "Chicken Littles" of the world should simply employ common sense to protect the Earth. Katie tells Jerry to broaden his dating pool beyond those with disorders similar to his, pointing out that love is irrational. Alan tells the banker to give Clarence sixty days to pay off his loan and then establish a fixed, reasonable rate for him, sternly informing Melvin that they are not friends and that he would not win against him in court. At the Christmas party, Clarence thanks Alan for his assistance and Jerry is stunned by a mistletoe kiss from Lorraine, though he asks Katie to dance as Clarence's date Doris sings a song. Carl informs Denny that they won their case against Walt, and Clarence dances with Whitney as Alan dances with Lorraine. Denny later tells Alan that he is not worried about the doctor's grim prognosis and intends to savor every day, confident that he can reverse his "mad cow disease" at will. They exchange Christmas wishes and tales, and Denny requests a slightly odd present from his best friend. Includes commercials and promos.
