BROTHERS & SISTERS: AN AMERICAN FAMILY (TV)

Summary

One in this drama series about the California-based Walker family, an adult clan of siblings trying to live up to their parents' lofty expectations after the death of the family patriarch.

In this episode, as Robert and Kitty attend a soldier's memorial, Robert gets word that Justin was injured in Iraq and is being flown home. The news quickly makes its way to the rest of the family and preparations begin for Justin's return to the Walker home. However, Nora, Kevin, and Kitty are the only relatives who find time to drive to the hospital. En route, they hear conservative radio host Luther Reeves blasting the liberal politics of the Walkers and blaming conservative Robert for his association with them. An incensed Kitty calls in and engages with Luther, as Kevin and Nora shout from the background. Ultimately, Robert and his campaign manager Travis are furious at Kitty for having started a debate with Luther about Abraham Lincoln's sexuality.

Rebecca reunites with her old friend Lena, who is looking for work. Rebecca suggests that Lena get a job with Holly. After Tommy subsequently hires her as office manager, Lena has an awkward introduction to Saul; she believes him to be gay and tries to set him up with her uncle. Upon going home, Tommy is angered when Julia snipes at him over his care of Elizabeth. Across town, Sarah is hurt when Joe tells her that he wants to proceed with the divorce since he has already reunited with his ex-wife Paula. Sarah returns to the Ojai office, where Rebecca tells her that she was equally to blame for having kissed Joe, and leading him on. Holly intercedes on Rebecca's behalf, leading to an exchange of insults between Sarah and Holly.

After seeing Justin, Nora is told by his doctor that, while stable, Justin's right knee sustained major nerve and tissue damage. Further, Justin has refused to take any narcotics as he's afraid of reverting to his addiction. Upon getting home, Justin is put off by all the attention from his family. When Joe drops off Cooper and Paige, he runs into Rebecca, causing another frisson with Sarah. Robert then flies cross-country and is able to help Justin deal with his anger, particularly after Nora's "assistance" results in a yelling match.

The next day, Robert tries to quell the Lincoln controversy as a guest on Luther's show, during which he defends the Walkers while also espousing his own principles. As Kitty and Travis watch, Luther backs down. Elsewhere, Holly and Rebecca reconcile as Holly councils Rebecca about her unfortunate encounter with Joe. Finally, Justin finds himself writhing in pain from his injuries, leading to his embracing Nora when she offers to help him through his crisis. Includes commercials.
