DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES: NOW I KNOW, DON'T BE SCARED (TV)

Summary

One in this darkly comedic soap opera about the denizens of Wisteria Lane, a suburban neighborhood with a seedy underbelly that is thrust to the forefront after the suicide of one titular housewife. Edie catches Carlos trying to leave her and, when asked if he is seeing another woman, he doesn’t tell her about his affair with Gabrielle. In retaliation she goes to the I.R.S. to reveal his illegal offshore bank accounts to them. Halloween comes to Wisteria Lane and Bob and Lee decide to throw a Halloween party. Bree continues to claim that her daughter Danielle is away in Switzerland; in reality she continues to be sequestered in the Van De Kamp home and is more than eight months pregnant. Danielle continues to be frustrated at her sequestration, and at Bree for forbidding her from attending Bob and Lee’s party. Gabrielle leaves Victor a voicemail message telling him that she’s leaving him. Susan and Mike visit a genetic counseling center to determine if their baby will be predisposed to any diseases or ailments. Once there, Mike accidentally reveals that his father is alive, even though he had previously told Susan that he was dead. He excuses himself before Susan can find out more, distressing her. Lynette awaits the test results for her latest cancer treatments, but is more concerned with a possum which has been ruining her garden. She begins taking obsessive measures to capture or kill it, seemingly ignoring any talk from her family about her condition. Mike finally tells Susan the truth: his father Nick is alive and serving a life sentence in prison for murder. He did not tell her before since he felt it would be awkward to reveal that on a first date. Susan wants to meet him partially to satisfy her curiosity and also to consult him about further family illnesses for the genetic counseling. Bree talks to Danielle about sending her back to the convent, a prospect which Danielle finds distasteful. Danielle claims she will have no difficulty giving up the baby, but Bree advises her that doing so may be more difficult than she thinks, as she is likely to have strong emotions towards the child. Danielle rebukes her, claiming that she is nothing like her mother. Gabrielle comes home to find Milton waiting for her. He reveals that he erased her voicemail to Victor and that he doesn’t know that she is leaving him. He tries to bribe her into changing her mind, giving her a large check which will not come into effect for 13 months. Gabrielle correctly surmises that he wishes her to stay with Victor long enough for him to run for governor, as a divorce beforehand would severely hurt his chances of being elected. She seems to consider his offer. The I.R.S. cannot produce any evidence of Carlos’s offshore bank accounts, much to Edie’s frustration. She confronts Carlos about it, but he offers her nothing in the way of information and claims he’s won their “game.” Lynette approaches Bree about her problem with the possum, and Bree suggests that she get an air rifle to shoot it; Lynette agrees with uncharacteristic glee at the prospect of killing the creature. Gabrielle tells Carlos about Milton’s offer, but he doesn’t want her to accept. He reveals the existence of his offshore accounts to her, which initially excites her. However, she quickly realizes that he had the money all throughout their marriage and their divorce, and thus she should have received half of it already. Angry at Carlos’s seeming inability to trust her, she throws him out. Susan and Mike visit Nick in prison, and the conversation soon turns to the circumstances of his incarceration. Nick explains that he murdered his co-worker who was promoted above him, a position he secured by spreading lies about him. Lee and Bob throw their Halloween party and people across the neighborhood attend, all in costume. Danielle arrives wearing a costume making her look like Bree and does a mocking impersonation of her, much to Bree’s anger and frustration. She is especially angry upon realizing that Danielle’s impression of her is spot-on. Susan becomes highly distressed at the idea that Nick apparently shows no remorse for the murder he committed, although Mike tries to explain that Nick is “a good guy who did an evil thing.” Mike notes that Susan’s belief that Nick is “evil” is exactly the reason he preferred to tell her that he was dead in the first place. Tom tries to get Lynette to attend the Halloween party, but she is busy trying to ambush the possum with her air rifle. When pressed, she implies that she is using her struggle against the possum as a proxy for her fight against her cancer, and Tom decides that it is best to leave her be. Bree and Danielle argue when her water breaks, and they rush back to their house with the rest of the family. There is no time to get Danielle to a hospital, and so Bree fetches Adam to deliver the baby. She insists that he keep everything secret, although he reveals he already knew that Bree was faking her pregnancy. He manages to successfully deliver Danielle’s baby, and it’s a boy. Later, Danielle is recovering when Bree brings the baby in for her to see. Danielle holds him and cries when Bree again asks her if she wants to give him up. Ultimately she decides it would be in everyone’s best interests if she did, although she realizes that Bree was right: it is extremely painful for her to give him up. Gabrielle tries to leave town for a while but is stopped by Victor. She has decided to leave him after all, but he vows that they can talk about their problems. He also explains that while his father wants him to run for governor, he would much rather be with Gabrielle instead. This appears to cause her to reconsider. Susan visits Nick alone, unwilling to believe that he has no remorse about murdering a man; she is concerned that his “lack of a conscience” will somehow genetically be passed down to her baby. Nick explains that if he truly thought about what he had done he would have gone insane. He notes that he is remorseful about what he did to Mike’s life: he was ostracized when it become known that his father was a convicted murderer and it negatively impacted his childhood. He says that despite the way Mike’s life is going now, he could snap just like he did, and advises her to watch Mike closely. Edie shows Victor the photos of Gabrielle and Carlos together, telling him that Carlos seduced her. Lynette is visited by her oncologist, who announces that her test results have come back and she is now free of cancer. Lynette is initially dazed by this news and goes outside to look at the stars. She notices the now-dead possum on her lawn and breaks down crying, apologizing to it for killing it. Includes commercials.
