JAZZ FROM LINCOLN CENTER: RENAISSANCE IN JAZZ
(RADIO)
Summary
One in this series of jazz music programs, hosted by Ed Bradley, featuring live performances and commentary by established and emerging artists. This program, featuring excerpts from previous concerts, demonstrates a new Renaissance in jazz which draws upon the music's heritage and features a collaboration of older masters with new stars. Bradley describes the first piece, "Limehouse Blues," as a classic saxophone battle between Todd Williams and Wess Anderson, featuring Marcus Roberts on piano, Reginald Veal on bass, and Herlin Riley on drums. Pianist Kenny Barron then interprets the Thelonious Monk composition, "Trinkle, Tinkle." Bradley discusses the musical legacy of Louis Armstrong and the mastery of Duke Ellington, followed by trumpeter Wynton Marsalis's rendition of Ellington's "Portrait of Louis Armstrong." Afterwards, Dr. Michael White leads a group of young New Orleans musicians, including solo clarinetist Nicholas Payton, in Jelly Roll Morton's composition, "Georgia Swing." Bradley introduces Miles Davis's "Milestones" as a signature piece demonstrating his move away from the complex musical styles of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker; the song is performed with Payton on trumpet, Veal on bass, Roberts on piano, Riley on drums, and Vincent Herring on saxophone. The last two pieces are McCoy Tyner's "Smitty's Place," featuring Tyner on piano, Gary Bartz and George Coleman on saxophone, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Christian McBride on bass, and Al Foster on drums; and Ellington's "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue" with saxophonist Todd Williams playing the part that Paul Gonsalves made famous at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival.
