RENDEZVOUS DES CAJUNS {FEATURING THE TRAHAN FAMILY BAND; LEIGH BABINEAUX; AND S.J. THIBODEAUX, FELTON LEJEUNE, & CAJUN CONNECTION} {KOSOFSKY ETHNIC RADIO COLLECTION -- CAJUN FRENCH AND ENGLISH} (RADIO)
Summary
One in this weekly series broadcast live from the Liberty Theater in Eunice, Louisiana, which focuses on Cajun music and humor. This week's guest host is Paul Marx of Eunice radio station KBON. The program begins with a set played by the Trahan Family Band. Marx points out that it is unusual for a Cajun band to feature a saxophone as this band does; the saxophone is wielded by Willy Trahan. The group plays a number of songs, including "La Valse de Bayou Teche," "La Valse de Reno," "Fanny Mae," and "Zydeco Man." After thanking the band, Marx introduces Darryl Toepfer of Toepfer's Electronics, whom he bills as the man responsible for putting the Liberty Theater's programs on the worldwide web. Toepfer encourages listeners to go to his web site, www.whodat.net, and pays tribute to the bands and volunteers who make the Liberty's programs possible. He then sits down, and Marx goes out into the audience to talk to out-of-state guests. The largest round of applause goes to visitors from the Netherlands, whom Marx encourages to come back during crawfish season. At the end of this segment, the host introduces Cajun humorist Leigh Babineaux. Babineaux, who makes fun of her own life and appearance, delivers anecdotes about trips to the mall, the experience of putting new carpeting in her home, the love life of her elderly grandmother, and her own thirty-year marriage. Her stories are in English, with a word or two of French thrown in from time to time. When Babineaux concludes her routine, Marx comes back onstage to deliver a brief preview of the following week's program and to welcome the next group -- S.J. Thibodeaux, Felton LeJeune, and Cajun Connection. The host explains that LeJeune in particular has served as an inspiration to many young musicians. The Connection performs a number of traditional Cajun tunes, including "Le Creole Stomp," "Le Church Point Breakdown," "Les Sons d'Ennuie," and "Le Bosco Stomp." Marx thanks them and his audience for everything and introduces the band's last number, "Le Two-Step du Vieux Temps," which the band plays as the program concludes.
