Summary
Tape one of four. A special presentation in this series
of live Spanish-language talk shows, broadcast for Latin
American listeners in the United States, Puerto Rico,
and Australia, emphasizing news, current events, and
fun. Broadcast on New Year's Eve, the special presents
fragments of some of the best programs of 1998. Host
Pedro Sevcec starts off the program with a discussion
with meteorologist John Morales about the most
impressive weather events of 1998, in particular the
massive destruction caused by Hurricanes Mitch and
George. Sevcec then moves on to the recorded programs.
These begin with a news item about the murders of over
100 women near the U.S.-Mexican border, between Pasos
and the city of Ju‡rez. JosŽ Antonio Parra, from the
Chihuahua state justice department, discusses criminals
in the area. Sevcec then plays an interview with
Mexican singer and actress Maribel Guardia. He and she
discuss her life as a popular Mexican star and the
richness of the artistic world in Mexico. Next, Sevcec
reviews fragments of one of his most intense 1998
interviews, a conversation with the stepdaughter of
Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, ZoilamŽrica Narvaez,
who in May 1998 revealed her nineteen-year history of
sexual abuse by her stepfather. This emotional
interview goes into detail about her experiences,
particularly about the accusations she had to face after
her confession. It is presented as a message of courage
and support to all those who suffer from sexual abuse.
More news items follow, including a story about the
closing of the U.S. Embassy in Israel, and Sevcec plays
Christmas music. Listeners are invited to call with
their opinions of the year that is drawing to a close,
and to share what has impressed or affected them the
most. Sevcec then plays an interview conducted by Jorge
Ramos with Argentinean soccer player Diego Simeone.
Next, two Chileans -- Arturo Pratt, chief of the naval
base Antarctica, and Guillermo Codoy, Corvette Captain
-- talk about life in Antarctica and in the naval base
there. More news follows, including a story about a
rise in the requests for unemployment help and another
about the projected journey to the United States of
Venezuelan President Hugo Chaves. Sevcec moves on to
an interview with a woman who witnessed the murder of
Mexican presidential candidate Luis Orlando Colosio; she
says that the "official" assassin did not really commit
this crime. This section of the program concludes with
an interview with Leopoldo Gonzales, a mayor in the
Chilean Fernandez Archipelago, where Aztec treasure is
being excavated. He and Sevcec discuss the
long-standing myth of this treasure and the many
expeditions from different countries that have tried to
