METROPOLITAN OPERA BROADCASTS: DON GIOVANNI,
ACT I, PT. 1 (RADIO)
Summary
Part one of four. One in this series of performances by
the Metropolitan Opera. In this program, hosted by
Milton Cross, the Metropolitan Opera performs "Don
Giovanni" by Mozart. Act I begins outside the palace of
Commandant of the Knights, Don Pedro. Nobleman Don
Giovanni's servant, Leporello, is complaining about his
job. He is being forced to stand guard outside the
palace, where Don Giovanni is attempting to seduce
Donna Anna, Don Pedro's daughter. Don Giovanni emerges
from the palace with Donna Anna, who is struggling to
free herself and finally succeeds. As she escapes, Don
Pedro appears in response to her screams, challenges Don
Giovanni to a duel, and is fatally stabbed by the
younger man. Don Giovanni escapes, as Donna Anna and
Don Ottavio, her fiance, return to the scene and find
her father's lifeless body. Don Ottavio vows to avenge
Don Pedro's death. In scene two, Giovanni's old flame,
Donna Elvira, arrives in search of her former lover.
Leporello tries to discourage her by reading a list of
Giovanni's latest romantic conquests, numbering in the
thousands. Disgusted, Donna Elvira vows never to love
him again. In the third scene, Donna Elvira sees Don
Giovanni flirting with the peasant Zerlina, who is
engaged to be married, and bitterly warns her not to
fall for his charming ways in the aria "Ah! fuggi il
traditor." Act I continues on R87:0179. Sponsored by
