
MAESTRO: THE ELEGANT BATON OF TOSCANINI, I (RADIO)
Summary
The first in a series of documentaries on conductor Arturo Toscanini produced by WFCR in Amherst, MA. Series host Frank Brieff, conductor of the New Haven Symphony and former member of the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Toscanini's direction, introduces the series and recalls Toscanini's rehearsals. In a performance recorded 18 July 1943, the NBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Toscanini plays the "Poet and Peasant" Overture by Franz von Suppe. Other highlights include: Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra rehearsing the orchestral suite from Zoltan Kodaly's opera "Hary Janos"; an interview with Kodaly from 1966, conducted by Toscanini's son Walter and by Don Gillis; and a performance of the "Hary Janos" suite, recorded 29 Nov. 1947, by Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Closes with an excerpt of "Aida" recorded 2 Apr. 1949, as a preview of the following week's program.
