LUX RADIO THEATRE: DARK VICTORY (RADIO)
Summary
One in this dramatic anthology series which presents radio adaptations of motion pictures featuring Hollywood stars, often in roles they originated on screen. In this program, based on the 1939 film "Dark Victory," Bette Davis and Spencer Tracy star. Davis is Judith Traherne, a wealthy young woman who has a brain tumor and the doctor who treats her condition. The day after a party at her house, Judith is unsteady and has a severe headache, despite the fact she didn't drink a drop all evening. Her best friend, Ann, feels there may be something wrong with Judith but can't talk her into seeing a doctor or persuade her to stop riding her horses. At the stable, Judith is riding the course when she has an accident and Ann summons Dr. Parsons. When Dr. Parsons comes to Judith's house, Judith falls down the stairs while leaving her room. He then refers this case to Dr. Steele, who is on the verge of closing his private practice. When Judith meets Steele, she reveals her stubbornness and denies everything Steele is saying about her health, but she finally agrees to take some tests. The tests reveal a brain tumor, and immediate surgery is required. Judith's operation is a success, but there is a strong possibility that the tumor might recur. Steele and Parsons discuss Judith's life expectancy and the prognosis is not good. Steele tells Ann about the prognosis as well but cannot bring himself to tell Judith. In the meantime, Judith has fallen in love with Steele, and Ann informs Steele, who has also fallen in love. Judith and her doctor are going to get married and move to Vermont, which pleases Judith very much. While she is packing up some things from Steele's office, however, she comes across a paper with her long-term negative prognosis on it. Angered that Steele would hide something that important from her, she calls off the marriage. Judith knows her time is coming and she goes to see Steele for what she thinks is the last time. They rekindle their romance, however, and get married. When Steele gets called away to begin research, Judith lets him go. She then lies down to sleep. Includes a brief discussion with the stars and Cecil B. DeMille. Includes commercials.
