MOONLIGHT, MEMORIES, AND MILLER, PT. 3 (RADIO)

Summary

Continued from R91:0051. Part three of three. This retrospective of the Glenn Miller Orchestra hosted by Jim Lang combines musical selections, interviews and discussion, and excerpts from various recordings. This part begins with a recording of the orchestra playing "Jukebox Saturday Night" as Miller introduces Harry James, who is going to take over the Miller airtime while he is in the service. Actor James Stewart discusses Miller's personality and shares more anecdotes about World War II and the orchestra. Lang talks about Miller's tour of Europe; the places one might have heard Miller's music during World War II; the way Miller and the band compare to other bands of their era; and he recalls the radio bulletin reporting that Miller's plane had been lost. Other recordings in the program include an audio clip from the film "The Glenn Miller Story," about Miller's disappearance; an old recording of Miller talking about his wartime concerts; and a radio broadcast from "buzz-bomb alley." Musical highlights include a special arrangement of "Moonlight Serenade," as well as the following: "Over There," "I've Got a Gal in Kalamazoo," "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree," "Lights Out," "The Little Brown Jug," "Spring Will Be So Sad When She Comes This Year," "The White Cliffs of Dover," "I'm Old-Fashioned," "St. Louis Blues," "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square," "American Patrol" and "Chattanooga Choo-Choo." The program concludes with a recording of Miller signing off during an old program. Includes commercials.
