JACKIE GLEASON SHOW, THE {EXCERPT} {THE HONEYMOONERS: THE HYPNOTIST} (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy/variety series featuring Jackie Gleason. This excerpt from a program features a sketch of "The Honeymooners" that originally aired in 1955. This series of sketches concerns Ralph Kramden, a blustery bus driver, his long-suffering but understanding wife, Alice, and their neighbors, Ed and Trixie Norton. In this sketch, Ralph and Ed are hypnotized by "The Great Fatchamara" at a meeting of the International Order of Loyal Raccoons. After the Raccoons finalize plans for the upcoming convention in Chicago, the Head Raccoon introduces the special entertainment for the evening: a hypnotist and fellow Raccoon member from Bayonne. Despite Ralph's boasts that he cannot be hypnotized, The Great Fatchamara succeeds in forcing the duo to obey various commands while under his spell. The Great Fatchamara successfully commands them to assume one other's identities and to pretend that they are bowling, and he gives them a post-hypnotic suggestion that will make them react whenever they hear the word "Chicago." Later, Ralph admits to Ed that he has not saved any money for the convention in Chicago, and that he plans to convince Alice to give him the money that she has saved. When Alice is uncooperative, Ralph schemes to persuade the hypnotist to force Alice to tell him where the money is so that Ralph can go to the convention in Chicago. Gleason speaks to the audience at the end of the sketch about his upcoming television show, "Best of Broadway: The Show-Off," with Thelma Ritter. Includes commercials.
(Series title varies; "The Jackie Gleason Show" from 1952-1961 and 1966-1970; "Jackie Gleason and His American Scene Magazine" from 1962-1966. "The Honeymooners" spin-off replaced the variety series 1955-1956.)
