
COSMOS: A PERSONAL VOYAGE: FROM THE SHORES OF THE COSMIC OCEAN {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The premiere episode of this thirteen-part series, hosted by Carl Sagan, about the universe. In this episode, Sagan travels through space and explores the wonders of the universe, and then returns to Earth where he visits the ancient library of Alexandria. Highlights of this program include Sagan's explanations the following phenomena: the distance of a light year; the components of a ring galaxy; the relationship between gravity and star clusters; the creation of pulsars and stars; the components of the Milky Way; and the structure of the planets existing in the Earth's solar system. On Earth, Sagan visits the city of Alexandria where he discusses the following topics: how Erastosthenes, the chief librarian in Alexandria during the third century B.C., calculated the Earth's circumference; the purpose of the library of Alexandria; and the achievements of "classical civilization." Sagan then presents the "cosmic calendar," which compares the length of the history of the human race to that of the entire cosmos.
