ANIMATED CLASSICS: CHARLES DICKENS' GHOST STORIES FROM THE PICKWICK PAPERS (TV)

Summary

One in this series of animated programs based on literary classics. In this program, the members of a scientific group are having a meeting at the Pickwick Club. Suddenly, the lights go out due to a raging storm outside. Because it is too dark to conduct their business or return to their homes, the men decide to drink brandy and trade ghost stories. The first story revolves around the plight of a young law student who is desperately seeking shelter on the night of a storm. He finally finds refuge in a deserted inn. Though the place is dirty and has not seen a living soul for many years, the student is thankful for the shelter. While studying his books, he is visited by an old ghost who once lived a solemn life in that very room. The spirit orders the student to leave at once since he wants the place to himself. However, the student is brave enough to ask why the ghost wishes to stay in the place if it caused him so much misery while he was alive, a thought that had never occurred to the angst-ridden spirit. In the second story, a tired drunken traveler collapses by a deserted livery stable. He awakens to find himself in front of a booming horse and buggy business. In addition, a carriage is waiting to take him for a ride. Three passengers join him on his journey. Two of the passengers are men who are holding the third passenger, a young lady, captive. The young traveler saves the woman from the evil men and promises that he will love no one but her. However, when he awakens, he finds himself by the deserted livery stable where he started. Much to his surprise, he spots a glove lying on the ground belonging to the lady who stole his heart. In the final story, a mean-hearted graved`igger named Gabriel spends Christmas Eve attempting to make everyone miserable. Gabriel heads into the cemetery with a bottle of gin and begins to dig a grave. A spirit rises from the graveyard and makes it clear that he is disturbed by the fact that Gabriel enjoys the horrors of life and is content with digging a grave on Christmas Eve. The spirit decides to bring Gabriel to a cave of Goblins to show him where he is headed if he does not change his ways.
