IN PERFORMANCE AT THE WHITE HOUSE: A TRIBUTE TO AMERICAN MUSIC {GEORGE GERSHWIN} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of programs featuring performances given at the White House. This program pays tribute to the work of composer George Gershwin (1898-1937). First Lady Nancy Reagan makes opening remarks and introduces host Marvin Hamlisch. The first performance of the evening is given by the vocal group The Manhattan Transfer, who sing a medley of Gershwin's music, including songs from the musical "Of Thee I Sing" and the ballad "Embraceable You." At the piano, Hamlisch gives a brief illustration of Gershwin's style, and then introduces jazz singer Sarah Vaughan who is accompanied by the Sarah Vaughan Trio as she sings "S'Wonderful," "Swanee," and "Fascinatin' Rhythm." Kitty Carlisle Hart is invited to share some of her recollections of Gershwin, and introduces singers Priscilla Baskerville and George Merritt, who perform selections from Gershwin's opera "Porgy and Bess," including "Summertime" and "Bess, You Is My Woman Now." Hamlisch plays "I've Got Rhythm," and The Manhattan Transfer and Vaughan each perform their own version of "Someone to Watch Over Me." As the programs concludes, all the performers gather to perform "Our Love Is Here to Stay." President Ronald Reagan makes closing comments and shares personal recollections.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by Verizon Foundation, 2003.
