WEST 57TH {PAULINA PORIZKOVA; BELLE GRADE HARVEST
OF SHAME; ROY ORIBSON TRIBUTE} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of news magazines. This edition features three main segments: "Paulina That Fabulous Face," "Belle Glade Harvest of Shame," and "Roy Orbison A Tribute." In "Paulina That Fabulous Face," Karen Burnes reports on supermodel Paulina Porizkova and her five million dollar contract with the cosmetic company Estee Lauder. Through interviews with Ronald Lauder, the head of Estee Lauder; Paulina's agent from Elite modeling agency; a cosmetics industry analyst from the brokerage firm Smith Barney; and a booking agent from "Baazar" magazine, Burnes follows Paulina's career to its pinnacle, and examines Estee Lauder's motivation for signing such a huge contract. Next, "Belle Grade Harvest of Shame" examines conditions in Belle Glade, Florida, a rural area considered a remnant of the plantation system. Belle Glade was covered in 1960 CBS documentary "Harvest of Shame," and this 1986 CBS investigation finds that little has changed in twenty-eight years. Reporter Steve Kroft interviews a retired farmworker, followed by a black-and-white clip from the 1960 documentary. A Florida Rural Legal Services lawyer reports that agricultural workers lack the rights other workers enjoy, such as the right to organize, health insurance, worker's compensation, and sick leave. Kroft provides additional statistical information about the exploitation of this particular group and the big businesses behind it. This segment ends with interviews with a nun and social worker in the community, a Jamaican sugar cane worker, and a retired farmworker. Next is a short segment about the comedians who entertain in the condominium communities of retired people wintering in Florida, which includes clips of several comedy shows, and interviews with the entertainers. "Roy Orbison A Tribute" features scenes of the singer rehearsing, in the studio, performing songs such as "In Dreams" on stage, as well as quotes from Bruce Springsteen, who spoke at Orbison's 1987 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The program ends with a follow-up on a past report about United Airlines. Includes commercials and promos. Includes a commercial with the Smothers Brothers for Magnavox. This program is closed-captioned.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by The Marc Haas and Helen Hotze Haas Foundation, 1998.
