Summary
The premiere of this satirical soap opera series about Mary Hartman, a housewife from Fernwood, Ohio. In the premiere, a mass murder is committed in Mary's neighborhood, and the killer is on the loose; Mary worries about the "waxy yellow build-up" on her kitchen floor; Mary becomes concerned about the waning sexual interest of her husband, Tom; and Mary is visited by her best friend, Loretta Haggers, an aspiring country music singer. As this episode concludes, Mary receives a call from the police about her grandfather, "the Fernwood Flasher," who has been arrested for exposing himself. Commercials deleted.
(New York premiere on Tuesday, January 6, 1976, on WNEW-TV. WNEW chose to air the first and second episodes together as a one-hour premiere on Tues. Jan 6th. According to "Syndicated TV The First Forty Years," by Hal Erickson, over 100 markets aired a half-hour premiere on Monday, Jan 5th. The Museum's copy is not the WNEW version.
