Summary
The premiere of this series of dramas about the personal and professional life of Rosie O'Neill, a Los Angeles County public defender. This episode introduces Rosie, a 43-year-old woman who was a partner for sixteen years in a successful Beverly Hills law firm with her husband, until he met a younger woman, filed for divorced, and took control of the practice. Now, almost a year later, Rosie struggles to start a new life, an effort compounded by the fact that she has forsaken a lucrative private practice for poorly-paid work as a public defender. Rosie's affluent family and friends don't understand her choice, while her new co-workers think that she is "slumming." In this episode, she inherits the cases of a former colleague whom she learns has been removed due to cocaine abuse, and meets her new office mate, Hank Mitchell. Hank worked his way up from the streets and greets Rosie with hostility because of her background. Rosie contends with Hank, deals with her strong feelings of loss over the break-up of her marriage, and puts in long hours on her first inherited case -- defending a young homeless woman who has been arrested for the murder of her newborn baby.
