AN INCONVENIENT WOMAN {PART 1 OF 2} (TV)

Summary

Part one of this two-part television movie about the dysfunctional lives of the wealthy and powerful denizens of Los Angeles. This story is told through the eyes of a young writer named Philip Quennell and a waitress named Flo March. Jules Mendelson, a married business tycoon, begins a love affair with Flo March, whom he meets at a neighborhood diner. Jules sets Flo up in a house and lavishes her with expensive gifts. At the same time, he is waiting to see if he will receive a government appointment in Brussels. In anticipation of his getting the post, a party is given in his honor. Philip Quennell attends the party and meets Jules and his wife Pauline. He also makes the acquaintance of a woman named Camilla, with whom he becomes romantically involved. The next day, Camilla learns that her uncle Hector has been murdered. At the scene of the crime, Phil learns that Hector was shot in the chest three times, but at the funeral and in the newspapers it is stated that Hector committed suicide. Disturbed by the cover-up, Phil begins to investigate. He accidentally meets Flo at an AA meeting and learns that Hector frequented a gay men's bar. There, Phil meets a bartender who tells him that on the night Hector died he left the bar with a hustler named Lonny. Meanwhile, Jules's stepson, Kippie, who has a severe drug habit, becomes indebted to a gangster named Zwillman who wants Mendelson to launder money for him. Pauline learns of Jules's affair and leaves Jules to visit her father, taking Kippie with her. Jules then upsets Flo, who runs off to talk to Phil. Not knowing where Flo has gone, Jules trashes her house and is alarmed when he discovers a pillow with blood on it. Phil, meanwhile, is having problems in his relationship with Camilla.
