CHRISTABEL {PART 2 OF 4} (TV)
Summary
Continued from T:23584. Part two of this four-part drama adapted by writer Dennis Potter, based on "The Past is Myself" by Christabel Bielenberg. A straightforward adaptation of Bielenberg's memoirs, this program offers an impressionistic view of life in Germany during the rise of Hitler. Christabel, a privileged English lady who goes to live with her new husband, a German lawyer, in 1934, finds that she is ill-prepared for the alarming political situation and the privations of war. Two qualities attracted Potter to the story: "One, it's a celebration of married love, and two, it's the perfect answer to collective guilt. They were confronted by this raving maniac and yet managed to emerge without doing anything degrading." Continues with B:23586.
