AMERICAN PLAYHOUSE: BELIZAIRE THE CAJUN (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic anthology series. In this film set in the late 1850's near the Louisiana Bayou region, a group of white vigilantes threatens to drive the Cajun population off their land. The magical abilities of the Cajun healer Belizaire Breaux arouse fear in the white men of the village. When the vigilantes accuse Belizaire's cousin, Hypolite Leger, of murder, Belizaire takes desperate measures to save his cousin's life, and enlists the help of his former sweetheart, Alida, who is married to a white rancher. Robert Duvall makes a brief cameo appearance as the town preacher.
(This program contains a one-minute long intermission. Cajun French portions are not subtitled in English. The film received the Official Selection award at the Cannes Film Festival, awards at the Houston International Film Festival in the categories of Best Score and Best of Festival, and Assante received the Best Actor award at the U.S.A. Film Festival.)
