coverage of the attempted coup against Soviet President
Mikhail Gorbachev. On "CNN Newsday," Lou Waters and
Sharyl Attkisson review the events that have occurred in
the Soviet Union today, with reports on the following
developments: rumors persist that an attack on the
Russian Federation Building is imminent; a curfew has
just been enacted (11:00 p.m. Moscow time); Soviet
Prime Minister Valentin Pavlov, one of the coup
plotters, is suffering from a heart ailment and is
unable to continue on the state committee; and there are
unconfirmed rumors that Soviet Defense Minister Dmitri
Yazov and KGB Chairman Vladimir Kryuchkov, both coup
plotters, have fallen ill. Also in this hour: the
results of a Gallup-CNN poll about American reaction to
the coup; CNN political analyst William Schneider
explains how the coup will effect U.S. politics and the
presidential election; in a "News From Medicine"
segment, various doctors discuss the possibility that
Gorbachev has diabetes; British Prime Minister Margaret
Thatcher comments on the coup in an interview taped
earlier with Reid Collins; and the segment "Your Money"
addresses investment planning in times of global
insecurity. The hour concludes with a look at two
Russian citizens who are unsure about the future of
their country, a six-year old Russian boy who came to
America with his mother for an operation. Continues
