NBC'S SATURDAY NIGHT {SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE} {STEVE MARTIN, LILY TOMLIN, THE KINKS} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. This program includes the following highlights: in the cold opening John Belushi, Bill Murray, and Garrett Morris berate host Steve Martin for his shabby treatment of Gilda Radner, whom he "dumped" when his career took off; Martin performs a monologue in which he gets "happy feet," sings a "traditional American Indian folk song," and talks about a new drug that makes one small; "The Coneheads at Home" features Aykroyd, Jane Curtin, and Laraine Newman as a family from another planet who have taken up residence on Earth and now receive a visit from Steve Martin as an IRS investigator; accompanied by a violin and piano, Garrett Morris -- dressed in a Harry Belafonte-like ruffled shirt and clamdiggers -- does a vocal recital of "Nur Wer Die Sehnsucht Kennt"; in "Celebrity Weightlifting," John Belushi appears as a Russian Olympic lifter who competes against Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (Radner) in the clean-and-jerk combination; the Kinks perform "You Really Got Me" and "Lola"; and in a mock commercial, Gilda Radner portrays the author of "Dr. Breadloaf's Quick-Loss Diet Book."

In "Weekend Update," anchor Jane Curtin introduces a report from correspondent Laraine Newman from President Jimmy Carter's new flying command post -- a hi-tech 747 -- and interviews the major general who maintains it (Aykroyd); in a diner setting, waitresses Radner, Curtin, Newman, and Lily Tomlin sing and dance to Stephen Sondheim's "Broadway Baby"; Martin portrays a doctor with a terrible bedside manner who informs parents Murray and Curtin that their comatose son (Belushi) is not long for this world and suggests "accidentally" pulling the plug on his life-support; Morris introduces a film short about Buster Holmes, the owner of a soul food restaurant in New Orleans' French Quarter; Martin hosts a Hollywood Squares-like game show called "Hollywood Bingo" featuring Radner as Charo, Morris as Sammy Davis, Jr., Newman as Sandy Duncan, Aykroyd as Vincent Price, Curtin as Rose Marie, Murray as Hal Linden, Belushi as Robert Blake, and Tomlin as Farrah Fawcett-Majors; Tomlin presents a film short called "From the Big Orange to the Big Apple," featuring several of her characters on a road trip to New York City; author Alex Haley (Morris) introduces his new miniseries about white slaves in the South, featuring Belushi and Murray as slaves on the auction-block "white sale," Martin as their jailer, Aykroyd as a used-car salesman-like auctioneer, and Newman as a crinolined bidder; the Kinks return to perform "Sleepwalker"; and Martin and Radner appear as a couple who meet in a singles' bar and discover they have some very specific common interests. Includes commercials and promos.
