CNN SOVIET COUP COVERAGE, HOUR 55: "CNN SPECIAL REPORT" AND "DAYBREAK" (TV)
Summary
The 55th hour of CNN's coverage of the attempted coup against Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. On "CNN Special Report," Patrick Greenlaw reviews developments in the Soviet Union during the past 24 hours: the Russian parliament is holding an "extraordinary" session and calling for all able-bodied men to defend the building; Russian government sources who had previously said that KGB Chief Vladimir Kryuchkov had left the committee now report that they were wrong, and he continues to be a coup leader; and excerpts from Russian television (not shown in the Soviet Union) depict the previous night's outbreak of violence. Live reports from Kennebunkport, Maine, and London, England, examine the reactions of Pres. George Bush and European leaders. Following a report on the Soviet troops taking part in the coup, Greenlaw concludes the program by introducing a video montage of scenes from the previous evening. On "Daybreak," Greenlaw and Molly McCoy review the Soviet situation. A TASS report states that the Communist Party is urging Soviet President Gennadi Yanayev to meet with Gorbachev as soon as possible to resolve the crisis. Also included: a review of the previous evening's sports scores and a national weather forecast. The hour concludes with Greenlaw repeating the late-breaking story about Yanayev and Gorbachev's possible meeting. Continues with T:27664.
