SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE {STEVE MARTIN, RANDY NEWMAN, NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. Steve Martin hosts this edition, which includes musical guests The Dirt Band and Randy Newman. The show begins with a spoof on President Jimmy Carter's State of the Union Address. Martin then does his monologue in which he accuses John Belushi of stealing fifty dollars from his pocket. Highlights include the following sketches: a commercial parody for Swill Natural Spring Water; a park ranger informs a family to be on the lookout for the mysterious creature Bigfoot who is wandering the area; those two "wild and crazy" swinging Festrunk Brothers have dates with two women through a computer dating service and can't wait to have sex with the two "American foxes," but are disappointed when it turns out that the ladies are not American and the foxes fall for the Festrunk's neighbor, Cliff; The Dirt Band performs the song, "On the Loose with the Blues"; a mock commercial for the new revolutionary after-shower cleaner, The Body Floss; Weekend Update recaps the news events of the week with special reporter, Roseanne Roseannadanna (Gilda Radner); Randy Newman performs his hit single, "Short People," and "Rider on the Rain" with the help of The Dirt Band; an ordinary family, The Mels, compete with the Coneheads in a version of the game show "Family Feud"; a panel discussion called "What If?" takes viewers' questions about ridiculous topics, including this week's question: what if Napoleon had access to a B-52 Bomber plane?; a short film of Steve Martin traveling to movie stars' homes in Beverly Hills; and The Dirt Band close the show with the song "White Russia," with Martin joining in on the banjo. Includes commercials and promos.
