MISTER ROGERS' NEIGHBORHOOD: MR. ROGERS GOES TO SCHOOL {DAY 2} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of programs for young children, hosted by Fred Rogers, which uses puppets and music to teach patience and cooperation, while providing guidance to help children cope with feelings and frustrations. This episode is one in an ongoing series subtitled "Mr. Rogers Goes to School," in which the host aims to render young children more comfortable in their forays into formal education. Mister Rogers begins with his signature song, "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" The host then launches into a lesson in rudimentary arithmetic, using a collection of bananas and oranges as visual aids. Next, a series of clips is screened in which young children recount the feelings that struck them about their first day of school. "We didn't do nothin,'" one declares. "It was borin.' Just sat around and got all 'quainted." Another boy remembers being excited at getting to hold the flag for the Pledge of Allegiance. Mr. Rogers then demonstrates how walkie-talkies work, using his "speedy delivery" mailman friend as a test subject. After a visit to the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Mr. Rogers is given a tour of a first-grade classroom by a teacher named Mr. Early. During the tour, Mr. Rogers points out that one of the advantages of beginning elementary school is that each student gets to have his or her own desk. This program is closed-captioned.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, 2000.
