STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION: THE SCHIZOID MAN (TV)

Summary

One in this series of science fiction programs about the voyages of the U.S.S. Enterprise in the 24th century. This sequel to the original "Star Trek" series is set approximately 85 years after the journeys of the first Enterprise crew. In this episode, the Enterprise answers a call for emergency medical care from Kareen Brianon, the young assistant of the brilliant, ailing Dr. Ira Graves. The doctor has been living in near isolation for years while concentrating on molecular cybernetics research. While attempting to administer medical help to the distrustful doctor, the crew learns that Graves, who has been diagnosed as terminally ill, was the mentor of Data's creator, Dr. Noonian Soong. Graves is determined to have his consciousness survive after his body expires, and has created a device capable of transferring consciousness into a computer. When Data innocently remarks to his "grandfather" that he understands death because he can be "switched off," Graves realizes that he has found a body that can hold his consciousness. The new Data, which is dominated by Dr. Graves's personality, wreaks havoc aboard the Enterprise, accuses Capt. Picard of lusting for Kareen, and tries to convince his young assistant to undergo a similar transformation as well. When Picard discovers the reason that Data is acting so irrationally, he tries to confront the scientist about his increasingly reckless actions. Commercials deleted.
