CBS EVENING NEWS WITH DAN RATHER {DAY ONE OF THE REAGAN-GORBACHEV WASHINGTON D.C. SUMMIT} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of nightly newscasts. This program, anchored by Dan Rather, focuses on day one of the three-day summit in Washington D.C. between U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev. Other news topics include a mysterious commuter airplane crash in California, and the capture of U.S. pilot James Denby in Nicaragua. As the program opens, Bill Plante reports on the first day's accomplishment, the signing of a treaty that reduces nuclear missiles, and he outlines the contents of the treaty. Wyatt Andrews reports on Gorbachev's goals for the summit, his motivations for arms control, and the long-term Soviet plan for arms control. Next, Rather interviews Secretary of State George Shultz about the following issues: the mood between Reagan and Gorbachev at the summit; the possibility of Gorbachev's goal to eliminate nuclear weapons by the turn of the century; the INF treaty, which would reduce intermediate-range missiles, and START, a treaty that would reduce strategic arms; and speculation over events within the next twenty-four hours. In other news reports, Jerry Bowen reports on the mysterious commuter plane crash, which occurred in California en route to San Francisco. Investigations suggest a possible combined murder and suicide attempt by disgruntled USAir customer service agent David A. Burke, whose boss was a passenger on the plane who had recently fired Burke. And Eric Enburg reports on Denby, an American pilot whose plane was brought down by soldiers in Nicaragua; Denby is being held prisoner for a supposed connection with Oliver North and the illegal funding of the Contras. In further summit news, David Martin reports on the difficulty of verifying the terms of the arms control agreement, and Bob Schieffer and Mark Phillips report in Moscow and Vermont about the reactions from schoolchildren and women to the summit and superpower relations. Appearing in news clips are Reagan; Gorbachev; Soviet spokesman Gennadi Gerasimov; Richard Bretzing of the FBI; private pilot Gene Katz; aviation attorney Arthur Wolk; Denby's brother, W. William Denby; former Deputy Assistant Defense Secretary Frank Gaffney; and Kenneth Adelman of Arms Control and Disarmament. Includes commercials.
