Summary

Tape one of two. Segments from one in this series of early morning programs, featuring interviews, special features, and news. In the first segment, live in Moscow on September 10, 1984, Bryant Gumbel speaks with Marshal Sergey Akhromeyev and First Deputy Foreign Minister Georgiy M. Kornienko on such topics as: Akhromeyev's recent appointment as chief of staff of the Soviet armed forces; how Akhromeyev's leadership will differ from his predecessor Nikolai Ogarkov; whether President Ronald Reagan will meet with Ambassador Andrei Gromyko at a United Nations conference and the value that such a meeting would have; speculation surrounding President Konstantin Chernenko's health; and the whereabouts of nuclear physicist Andrei Sakharov. In the second segment, Gumbel and anchor Jane Pauley report live from Vatican City, then show a tape of them exchanging Easter greetings with Pope John Paul II in St. Peter's Square. In the third segment, live from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, Gumbel speaks with Hanoi politburo member Le Duc Tho on such topics as: "normalization" between the United States and Vietnam; how to justify Vietnam's presence in Cambodia; how long his forces will remain in Cambodia; what he would say to the families of American soldiers that died in Vietnam; and Vietnam's "survey" effort to locate MIAs. In the fourth segment, Gumbel speaks with Senator Edward Kennedy (via satellite from Washington, D.C.) on such topics as: the rape accusation against his nephew William Kennedy Smith; whether he has regrets over the incident; whether he has a drinking problem; and the vote on an upcoming health insurance bill. In the fifth segment, Katie Couric, Gumbel, and Joe Garagiola learn about the new craze of step aerobics from fitness expert Jen Miller. In the sixth segment, from Honolulu, Hawaii, on November 18, 1991, Gumbel, Couric, Garagiola, and Willard Scott report from Waikiki Beach. In the seventh segment, Couric speaks with former Ku Klux Klan member David Duke (via satellite from New Orleans) on such topics as: why he is running for the Republican presidential nomination; why he thinks he's qualified to be president; how he would reduce the federal budget deficit; how he would handle the welfare system; how he would deal with foreign policy; and his thoughts on Jews, the Japanese, and Democrats.
